Expert Guide · Rodent Identification

Mice vs Rats:
Know the Difference

I get calls almost every week from homeowners in Dublin, Meath, and Louth who are convinced they have mice, only for me to arrive and find rats — or vice versa. It’s an understandable mix-up. Both rodents are secretive, nocturnal, and leave similar evidence. But the treatment approach and the level of urgency are quite different.

After 20 years in the field, I've seen it all: mice in Raheny terraces, rats in Swords new builds, and commercial issues in the city centre. This guide is here to give you an honest assessment of what you're dealing with.

📌 Quick Identification Rule: If it's larger than your fist with a thick blunt snout and a long scaly tail, it's a Rat. If it fits in the palm of your hand with large ears and a pointed nose, it's a Mouse.

1 Appearance: Size & Features

🐭 Mouse
3–4 inches
🐀 Rat
9–11 inches

🐭 House Mouse

  • Pointed, triangular snout
  • Large, prominent ears
  • Thin, slightly hairy tail
  • Droppings: Rice-grain sized

🐀 Brown Rat

  • Blunt, rounded snout
  • Small ears close to head
  • Thick, scaly tail
  • Droppings: Banana-shaped

2 Where They Live in Irish Homes

🏚️ A Note on Irish Housing Stock: Older properties in Clontarf, Raheny, and Artane are vulnerable to mice due to aging pointing and suspended timber floors. Newer builds in Swords and Malahide often attract rats via greenfield drainage.

3 What They Eat: Why Baiting Differs

🐭 Mice: Nibblers

Mice love cereals, grains, and chocolate. They nibble many times a day, taking tiny amounts.

🐀 Rats: Omnivores

Rats eat almost anything—meat, veg, scraps. They are neophobic, meaning they are wary of new things, requiring patient baiting.

💧 Water Needs

Rats need water daily. Mice extract most of their moisture from food, allowing them to survive in dry lofts.

4 Behavior & Habits

Droppings & Gnaw Marks

Mouse droppings are small (3–6mm), like rice grains. Rat droppings are large (12–20mm) and blunt. While both gnaw, rats can chew through lead pipes, brick mortar, and wooden joists with aggressive strength.

⚠️

If You Hear Scratching—Act Now

By the time you hear them in the walls, the infestation is established. A pair of mice can produce 10 litters a year. The longer you wait, the higher the cost to resolve it.

5 Health & Safety Risks

🔌 Fire Hazard

Rodent gnawing on cables is a major cause of house fires. Rats can produce 7,000 PSI of pressure—easily stripping live wiring.

🦠 Disease

Pathogens include Salmonella, Weil's Disease (Leptospirosis), and E. coli. HSE advises prompt action to protect your family.

6 How They Get In

🐭 Mice Entry

  • Gaps as small as 6mm
  • Around pipework
  • Air bricks & vents

🐀 Rat Entry

  • Broken drain runs
  • Damaged inspection covers
  • Gaps under sheds

7 DIY vs Professional Treatment

1

Any Rat Infestation

Professional-grade rodenticide is far more effective than supermarket blocks. Failed DIY attempts create bait-shy rats.

2

Recurring Problems

If they keep coming back, the entry points aren't sealed. Professional proofing stops the cycle.

3

Commercial Legality

Irish food businesses have legal obligations for documented professional pest control.
