Even Football Stadiums Get Rats – What Cardiff’s Pitch Invasion Teaches Dublin Homeowners

If you caught the Wales vs Belgium match earlier this week, you witnessed something that’s never happened in 36 years at Cardiff City Stadium,  a rat taking off across the pitch during a match.

In the 66th minute, with Belgium leading 2-1, play came to a complete stop.

Not for an injury, not for VAR, but for an unexpected and unwelcome guest.

The Real Madrid goalie Thibaut Courtois actually tried to catch the rat himself before Wales substitute Brennan Johnson eventually ushered it off the pitch.

The rat then slipped past a ball boy and disappeared behind the VAR monitor.

It’s the kind of moment that goes viral on social media, which it did. But in all seriousness, there is a lesson here for property owners across Dublin and beyond.

Even the Best-Maintained Properties Face Rat Challenges

Here’s what stood out to us at House and Home Pest Control: Cardiff City Stadium isn’t some neglected venue. Its a new stadium. built in 2009.

They have rat bait stations throughout the stadium. They follow strict cleaning policies, picking up litter and leftover food immediately after games. They work closely with professional pest control partners.

And yet, a rat still made its way onto the pitch during an international match.

Wayne Nash, Cardiff City’s head of operations, was quick to explain the reality: “The stadium is close to allotments and railway sidings and we know rats can be problematic. The railway bankings can be infested with rats.”

Sound familiar? If you live anywhere near the DART line in Dublin, near allotments, or even just in older neighbourhoods with mature trees and established gardens, you’re dealing with the exact same challenge.

Super Rats

It’s Not About Cleanliness – It’s About Location

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear from customers is that rats only invade dirty or neglected properties. The Cardiff incident proves otherwise.

Rats are incredibly adaptable creatures. They’re looking for three things: food, water, and shelter. If your property is located near:

  • Railway lines (like the DART in Dublin)
  • Parks or green spaces
  • Waterways or coastal areas
  • Older neighbourhoods with established drainage systems
  • Areas with nearby construction or development

…then you’re at higher risk, regardless of how clean your home is.

In Dublin, we see this constantly. Lovely homes in Malahide, Portmarnock, Howth, and Swords – all well-maintained properties – still experience rat problems simply because of their location near the coast, green spaces, or railway lines.

Prevention is the Key

Rat flap

Cardiff City did everything right. They have bait stations, they clean thoroughly, they monitor the situation. But as Wayne Nash admitted, “we do have the odd sighting of them.”

The same is true for homeowners. You can seal up obvious entry points, keep your bins tidy, and avoid leaving food out – and you absolutely should do all of these things. But rats are persistent, and they’re incredibly good at finding ways in.

A rat can squeeze through a hole the size of a 50 cent piece. They can climb vertical walls, swim through pipes, and gnaw through wood, plastic, and even some metals. If they want in, they’ll find a way.

What Dublin Homeowners Can Learn

The Cardiff incident highlights a few important points:

1. Early detection matters. The stadium staff knew rats were in the area and had systems in place. They didn’t wait until there was a major infestation.

2. Professional help is essential. Cardiff works with pest control partners year-round, not just when there’s a problem.

3. Location determines risk. Some properties will always be at higher risk due to their surroundings.

4. One sighting means there are more. The rat that made it onto the pitch wasn’t alone. Where there’s one, there are usually many more hidden away and they breed very quickly.

What We Do Differently

At House and Home Pest Control, we don’t just deal with the immediate problem. Like Cardiff City, we know that in certain locations, rats are simply part of the landscape. Our approach focuses on:

  • Finding how rats are getting into your property
  • Removing the immediate infestation using safe, effective methods
  • Inspecting your entire property for potential entry points
  • Blocking holes and gaps around pipes, cables, and foundations
  • Providing ongoing monitoring and prevention advice

We operate across Dublin, including Malahide, Portmarnock, Swords, Howth, and surrounding areas – all locations where rats are a common concern due to proximity to the coast, DART line, and green spaces.

Don’t Wait for a “Pitch Invasion”

Cardiff City was fortunate that their rat problem only caused a brief, embarrassing interruption to a football match. For homeowners, the consequences can be far more serious – health risks from disease-carrying rodents, damage to your property’s structure and wiring, and the stress of dealing with an infestation.

If you’ve noticed any signs of rats, droppings, chewed materials, scratching sounds in walls or ceilings, or even just one sighting, don’t wait.

As Cardiff’s experience shows, one visible rat means there are likely many more you’re not seeing.
